A-10 day TOUR in the SOUTH of KENYA Comprising 8 legs, covering 1375 km 84% off-road |

Level of off-road riding skills: Easy for experienced and medium for amateurs |
|
10 days - 8 legs of cross-country ride off the
beaten track, alternating bush hotels and camping.
From Nairobi highlands down to indian Ocean’s
white sandy beaches passing through the Rift Valley,
mount Kilimanjaro, Tsavo reserve and Taita Hills.
Although we do not cross national parks we do
pass through animal territories, and encounter
with wildlife is assured. |

PROGRAMME and ITINIRARY: |
| Day 1: NAIROBI AIRPORT - HOTEL (30 Km) |
Welcome at NAIROBI airport
and transfer to Carnivore restaurant then to SWARA
hotel (**) at the boundary of Nairobi National
Park. |
| Day 2: NAIROBI - EWASO NGIRO
RIVER : 170 km on stony trail + 40 km on tarmac (7 hours
link) |

Encounter with giraffes on Mosiro trail
|
Breakfast and briefing.
Depart towards Ngong hills then immediately down
a trail, through the dry western slope of the hills
straight into the heart of the Great Rift Valley
and Masai Land. Already expect uncommon encounters
on this route and all the way to the end of the
leg: Mosiro: a small Masai village.
Arrive in the afternoon at the village, welcome
and escort by local inhabitants to the campsite
near Ewaso Ngiro River at the foot of Nguruman escarpment.
Game tracking on foot under escort of the Masai
Morans along the river to watch animals coming to
drink just before sunset.
Entertainment by the Masai (traditional song, dance
etc.). Return to campsite for barbecue
dinner together with Masai warriors and listen to
their adventurous experiences with wild animals.

| Day 3: MOSIRO - NGONG HILLS
: 165 Km on stony trail + 30 km on tarmac (7 hours link) |
Ride to and visit nearby
traditional Masai villages. Drive through the foot of
Suswa and Longonot volcanos and up a steep trail that
ascends atop Nairobi plateau. This elevated altitude offers
a splendid view of deep Rift Valley. Accommodation at
Whistling Thorns cottages (**) facing
Ngong Hills.

| Day 4: NGONG HILLS - MAPARASHA HILLS : 160 Km on earth track + 20 on tarmac
(6 hours link)
|
Drive towards Mount Kilimanjaro
on a narrow track across the savannah between acacias
and anthills. Expect to meet herds of livestock, antelopes
or giraffes. The day ends at Maparasha hills campsite;
pitch-tent, then trek to the top of nearby hills to watch
fascinating wildlife and capture the mesmerizing sunset
on Kilimanjaro (19950 ft), whose summit seems buoyant
in the clouds. Later retire to the campsite for an African
dinner around a wood fire. |
| Day 5: MAPARASHA - KILIMANJARO : 190 Km on sandy and stony trails (6 hours and half link) |
A visit to a local primary
( Maparasha ) school then drive on an animal trail in
the savannah vegetation against the view of Mount Kilimanjaro
which, in clear weather, appears spread on its base in
marvelous splendor, astride the southern horizon.
Wildlife can be seen through the stretch of the track
that runs alongside the pipeline carrying water tapped
from the colossus mountain. Ride along a track bordered
with beautiful Acacia Tortillis, and arrive at Sopa Amboseli
Lodge (***), built on the northeastern base of Kilimanjaro.
The lodge, one of the oldest in the region, has been recently
renovated and is where Hemingway used to come for a drink.

| Day 6: KILIMANJARO - LAKE JIPE 180 Km - earth and stones (7 hours link) |

Meeting with Masai people
|
Driving away towards
Tsavo on a red soil trail covered with black volcanic
stones, the Kilimanjaro remains behind in a full
enjoyable view. Arrive at the gate of Tsavo-west
National Park and load the bikes on a lorry. Cross
the park by car to Ziwani gate where the bikes are
off-loaded. Again continue the ride towards Lake
Jipe (a part of Tsavo West Reserve) arriving there
through a sandy track. Boat ride on the lake before
sunset. Return to the bandas (cottages thatched
with coconut palm leaves) right on the lakeshore. |

| Day 7: LAKE JIPE - TAITA : 110 Km on sandy trail + 40 km of tarmac (5 hours link) |

Welcome at Chalani village
|
Early morning game
drive in the park aboard a 4WD car then depart to
Taita Hills, an "island" of luxuriant
greenery in the middle of vast dry bush and shrubbery
next to Tsavo Park. Enduro trail across the hills,
up through a steep track to the top of Sagala hills
for a spectacular view of Taita land.
Descend the hills and navigate through dry, bushy
vegetation to arrive at Taita Wildlife
sanctuary home to a large elephant population. For
the night: “Camping in the
middle of nowhere”, at the foot of Kopje rocks
(eroded rocks) that permit a splendid view on Tsavo
bush from their top. Dinner: served around wood
fire. |

| Day 8: TAITA - THE COAST : 90 km of earth and sandy roads et sable + 50 km on tarmac
(4 hours link)
|
This stage ushers you into
the coastal region. A remarkable change in the landscape,
climate and the local community (meet The SWAHILI people)
is gradually evident. Trails of red soil navigate you
through coconut trees and other tropical vegetation. Pass
the night camping among the local people,
near Kaloleni village, who will provide entertainment
with traditional beats and dances: a natural impression
of real African night under coconut trees and stars.

Day 9: KALOLENI VILLAGE - SOUTH COAST OF MOMBASA : 90 km on earth and stony raods + 40 of tarmac (3 hours and half link) |

Arriving on Diani beach
|
Morning visit to the
local community school then connect to Mombasa south
coast through a sandy track, passing round Shimba
hills (rain forest and home of the mighty elephant).
Enter Diani and proceed to a beautiful
white-sand beach for a seafood farewell party with
the whole crew. Later, move to your hotel: a 4*
beach hotel for a rest well deserved! Coral
reef, white sand and coconut trees. Dinner in your
hotel.

| Day 10: LEAVE THE BEACH, TAKE CONNECTING FLIGHT TO NAIROBI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT |
| Breakfast at the hotel. End of
afternoon, transfer to Mombasa airport to connect
Nairobi for your return flight. |
|
FOR YOU ATTENTION
- The itinerary may be changed in the event of adverse
weather conditions or other unfavorable extraneous
factors.
- Secondary tracks could, in some cases, be in very
bad condition, usually due to damage by heavy rains.
- The short rain season occurs in November, and brings
morning and evening showers. Usually however, most
roads are passable. The long rains season occurs in
April and May, during which time may roads are not
passable.
- Drivers need not to have a special level of driving
skills to participate. All that is necessary is team
spirit and the motivation - to enjoy! We take our
time to guide you and the tour leader is always available
to advice you.
- It is possible to have a customized itinerary e.g.
lengthen the legs for the most demanding riders …
Note that 150 Km on tracks are about 6 hours driving
with stops in between!
- We ensure our itinerary is practically off the beaten
track, so the participants experience authentic discoveries.
