8 legs of cross-country ride off the beaten track, discovering mount Kilimanjaro, the Great Rift valley, lake Natron, lake Manyara… encountering Masai people, crossing north eastern down to Pangani on the cost of the Indian Ocean from where dhows sail out of time towards Pemba and Zanzibar.


PROGRAMME and ITINIRARY
Day 1 : KILIMANJARO- MOSHI
Guests are welcomed at KILIMANJARO Airport then transferred by road to their hotel in Moshi town (30 km) for dinner and night.
DAY 2: MOSHI- KITUMBEINE  20 km of tarmac and 120 km of dirt road (6 hours)

Passing by Lengai volcano

Breakfast, briefing and depart on 140 km of trails passing at the foothill of Mount Kilimanjaro whose summit seems buoyant in the clouds. Then from Longido village going down into the great Rift towards mount Kitumbeine. Pic-nic lunch en route. Arrive at Kitumbeine to set up the camp nearby a Masai village.
Day 3 : KITUMBEINE- LAKE NATRON 90 Km of sandy and stony trails (5 hours)
Set off after breakfast. The trail rolls down into a vast valley where gnus, zebras, giraffes and antelopes assemble for pastures and water and…… there, you are! In one of Hemingway's hunting grounds. The last 50 km in this leg is a sandy and stony track cut in the rift. This leads to the foot of OLDONYIO LENGAI (2800 m a.s.l), “the mountain of God.” This Sacred Mountain of the Masai is surrounded by deep calderas whose sides are covered with ashy volcanic lava. From there, a sandy road takes you to the lowest point in whole Rift Valley: the shores of Lake NATRON, which is also the world's largest soda lake…… And then pure scenic splendor that inspires in the mind, the image of a picture from the moon. The lake has a particularly hot climate that, interestingly enough is the preferred breeding habitat for flamingos. The day ends at Kamakia campsite that is managed by the local Masai community. Visit by foot of a gorge nearby the campsite with a spectacular water fall. Dinner and night at Kamakia campsite.

Day 4: LAKE NATRON- LAKE MANYARA  120 km of sandy and stony trails (5 hours)
Passing after breakfast by the lakeshore whereby the flamingos feed. Then depart on a stony and dusty trail, along the Rift, passing by ENGARUKA a Masai village and ending up to MTO WA MBU town center, located within the greenery of luxuriant tropical vegetation at the shores of another soda lake; Lake MANYARA. An evening visit to Mto Wa Mbu market, for a sample taste of the local mood. Night at Wild Africa Manyara Lodge facing Lake Manyara.

Day 5: LAKE MANYARA Lake Manyara National Park and 40 km off-road (2 hours)

Leave the Lodge at dawn for a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. Return for lunch at the lodge then depart for 40 km of-road along Lake Manyara. Arrive at Paradise campsite, a superb site under acacias and palm trees, extraordinary habitat of colorful birds. Settling at the camp site, diner and night.
Day 6: LAKE MANYARA- KONDOA Tarangire National Park and 190 km of earth road (6 hours)
Early morning game drives in Tarangire National Park and depart, taking the north-south trans Tanzanian highway through forested areas and beautiful hills up to KONDOA highlands where you spend the night in a hotel.
Day 7: KONDOA- KIJUNGU 200 km of sandy trails (6 hours and half link)
A gentle descent into KITWEI plains on a sandy road, that for 100 Km, runs through acacia forests into a Masai village – KIJUNGU. Enduro loop through a forest track if timing allows. Camping: you will enjoy Masai style hospitality -BBQ and a great deal of traditional songs and dances.
Day 8: KIJUNGU– SINDENI 160 km of earth road (6 hours link)
This stage ushers you into the coastal region with a remarkable change in the landscape, climate and even the local peoples - you meet the SWAHILI community. Trails of red soil navigate you through mango, cashew nut trees and other tropical vegetation. The night is passed in camping among the local people and their entertainment with typical traditional beats and dances under the stars in an African night.
DAY 9: SINDENI- PANGANI 130 km of earth roads (5 hours link)

A very wonderful section which goes through a rain forest to link with PANGANI, a coastal town with a small Swahili port. Arrival early afternoon; night under the coconut trees at Peponi Resort in a beach “Banda"; a small hut whose roof is built of palm leaves.
Day 10: PANGANI- TANGA- ZANZIBAR
Lunch at the resort and flight Tanga-Zanzibar at 16h00, arrive at 17h00 in Zanzibar and transfer to Mtoni Marine Hotel, a beach hotel just 5 mn away from Stone town.

Day 11 and 12: ZANZIBAR

Day 13 : RETURN
Transfer in the afternoon to take the flight to DAR ESALAM at 17h50. Arrive at 17h15 at the international airport connect your international return flight.


FOR YOUR ATTENTION:
  • The itinerary may be changed in the event of adverse weather conditions or other unfavorable extraneous factors.
  • Secondary tracks could, in some cases, be in very bad condition, usually due to damage by heavy rains.
  • The short rain season occurs in December, and brings morning and evening showers. Usually however, most roads are passable. The long rains season occurs in March and April, during which time may roads are not passable.
  • Drivers need not to have a special level of driving skills to participate. All that is necessary is team spirit and the motivation - to enjoy! We take our time to guide you and the tour leader is always available to advice you.
  • It is possible to have a customized itinerary e.g. lengthen the legs for the most demanding riders … Note that 150 Km on tracks are about 6 hours driving with stops in between !
  • We ensure our itinerary is practically off the beaten track, so the participants experience authentic discoveries.
